Global law firm K&L Gates LLP advised Ørsted, a leading clean energy company, on a strategic partnership with Mission Clean Energy, a utility-scale renewable energy and storage developer, to advance four standalone battery energy storage systems across the Midwest. Ørsted is the only energy company in the world with a science-based net-zero emissions target as validated by the Science Based Targets initiative and is recognized as the world’s most sustainable energy company in the Corporate Knights Global 100 index.

Ørsted will provide financial support for interconnection queue positions for four storage projects owned by Mission, while Mission will continue to lead development of the projects. Mission and Ørsted submitted interconnection applications for the projects, totaling 1GW, in the Mid-Continent Independent System Operator Central and North.

Kansas City partner John Crossley led the K&L Gates team for Ørsted and Kaitlyn DeYoung also provided support as the strategic partnership between Ørsted and Mission Clean Energy was finalized.

Crossley stated: “Ørsted and Mission Clean Energy developed a unique and efficient structure to swiftly bring energy storage opportunities to the Midwest and we at K&L Gates are pleased to have been provided the opportunity to serve as Ørsted’s counsel. It’s invigorating to work with thoughtful, pioneering parties to achieve such an important goal.”

“We look forward to accelerating the expansion of storage projects across the Midwest as we broaden our portfolio of renewable energy technologies and services for customers, said Mike Morrow, VP of M&A and Business Development at Ørsted. “We enjoyed working with K&L Gates in structuring this unique and important partnership with Mission Clean Energy.”

In addition to their initiative with Mission Clean Energy in the Midwest, Ørsted will continue to seek opportunities to expand storage capacity across the United States.
